Tragic Sandwich

Food. Family. Fun.

In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning

Baguette has been waking up hungry. And screaming. And not really waking up, so we kind of have to guess what the problem is–but it always winds up being that she’s hungry.

I don’t like giving her milk in the middle of the night, because I’m worried about what the sugar will do to her teeth. But she won’t settle for water.

Any suggestions?

  1. We don’t offer anything at night, otherwise they get trained to wake up and never sleep through the night. Don’t ask me how I know that. A snack before bed, maybe? Something kind of high in fiber.

  2. What about unsweetened oat milk?

    • I’m going to try adding a little infant oatmeal to her milk tonight, to see if that will help it stay in her stomach longer. Is oat milk a distinct product? I’m not sure I’ve seen it–where can I find it?

  3. I’m going to say – go with feeding her. She’s still little and I don’t think feeding her at night every now and then is going to ruin her teeth. She’s probably in a growth spurt. (Or was, I’m a little late to the game on this post!) My advice, though, is don’t do ANYthing else. Feed her and put her back to bed. If it’s too much fun she’s going to start wanting to get up for reasons other than hunger. Seriously, about the teeth, just brush in the morning and at night – that’s plenty of care as long as you’re not giving her gummy candy and lollipops every day. I swear, I wasn’t half that diligent and my seven year-old is still cavity free.

    • Thanks! We’re trying to feed her more before bed, and that seems to be helping, but if she wakes up hungry, we’re not going to let her go without. Frankly, if I wake up hungry, I eat. Since she’s below average in weight, I don’t think that’s a big problem.
